Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification

Candidates need a Bachelor's degree in Engineering (B.E./B.Tech) or equivalent in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, or Electronics & Telecommunication from a recognized university. Candidates who cleared Sections A & B of the Institution of Engineers (India) exam, or the graduate membership exam of specified professional bodies, are also eligible.

Age Limit

Candidates must be between 21 and 30 years of age as on 1 August of the exam year, with standard relaxation for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD and other reserved categories.

Nationality

Open to Indian citizens, subjects of Nepal or Bhutan, Tibetan refugees who arrived before 1 January 1962, and persons of Indian origin who migrated from specified countries with the intention of settling permanently in India.

Exam Pattern & Selection Process

The UPSC ESE selection runs across three stages:

  1. Preliminary Exam (500 marks) — Objective papers covering general studies/engineering aptitude and a branch-specific paper.
  2. Mains Exam (600 marks) — Two conventional/descriptive papers specific to the candidate's engineering discipline.
  3. Personality Test (200 marks) — Final interview assessing technical knowledge, decision-making, and suitability for engineering services roles.

Final merit is calculated out of 1,300 marks (Prelims is only qualifying for merit — Mains + Interview marks decide the final rank). This three-stage format is what separates ESE from most other engineering recruitment exams, and it's also why Mains-qualified candidates shouldn't relax — the interview carries real weight in the final list.

What Happens Next

Shortlisted candidates should start interview preparation now rather than waiting for the schedule announcement — panels typically ask about current affairs, engineering judgment, and branch-specific scenarios, and 30–45 minutes goes by faster than it sounds. If you want a structured run-through of past ESE interview and mains question patterns before the summon letter arrives, our UPSC ESE mock test and previous papers section covers branch-wise practice sets for all four disciplines.
