RRB Technician Mock Test 2027: Free Grade 3 & Grade 1 Signal CBT Practice (CEN 02/2026 Pattern)

Last Updated: 25 October 2026 | Reviewed by Ali Hassan, Senior Content Editor (Government Exams), MockTestCenter.com

Why I Built This Mock Test Series

I'm , Shubham Kumar Sah founder of MockTestCenter.com.

If you go out and look for a Railway Technician mock test you'll invariably come across the same old paper. The reality is very different. Technician Grade 3 and Technician Grade 1 Signal are on different pay scales, require different qualifications and have very different mark schemes.

Grade 3 is 40 marks of General Science. Grade 1 Signal shifts the balance towards basic science, engineering, electronics and computer science. If you do your practice on the wrong grade paper it's a complete waste of your real preparation time.

Another point of confusion. A number of the candidates seem to think that Technician is akin to ALP i.e. a second CBT, a trade test and a psychology test. The official notification makes it clear that it isn't. It's a one stage CBT followed by document verification and medical.

This is broken down by grade with a separate tab for each grade. There's also timed practice based on the October 2026 shift papers for those of you who want to get a feel for what the actual exam is like.

The vast majority of the series is free. A diagnostic test really shouldn't be behind a paywall.

Every test we publish has to pass the test of utility in that it will in fact help someone walk in to the exam knowing exactly what grade they're getting, what the pattern is and what the marking scheme is. If the answer to that is no then it doesn't get published.

URGENT CORRECTION / AMBER CALLOUT BOX

Direct Clarification for Railway Aspirants:

  1. (1) No CBT-2, No Trade Test, No CBAT Psycho Test: Unlike the Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) recruitment route, the RRB Technician recruitment process is a one stage affair. It is a single stage Computer Based Test (CBT) followed by Document Verification (DV) and a medical examination. There is no CBT-2, no trade test and no CBAT psycho test.
  2. (2) Grade 3 and Grade 1 Signal are completely different papers: Never think of Grade 3 and Grade 1 Signal as one and the same. Grade 3 has 40 marks of Class 10 General Science. Grade 1 Signal has 35 marks of Basic Science & Engineering and 20 marks of Computer Fundamentals.
  3. (3) Current Cycle Context: The CEN 02/2026 examination cycle concluded its CBT phase between 6th and 9th October 2026 with the response sheets going live on 15th October 2026. The practice materials for the forthcoming 2027 cycle have been built on the very latest administrative template.

Preparing for a Technician post with Indian Railways requires a disciplined approach, a diagnostic mindset and complete clarity about the nature of the test. To get a Technician appointment at Pay Level 2 or Pay Level 5 you need a reliable preparation system. A good RRB Technician Mock Test 2027 will be a true to life CBT interface which will also identify your exact subject specific weaknesses whether it be in the Class 10 Physics equations, the Engineering fundamentals, the advanced electronics or the Quantitative Aptitude. This platform offers a comprehensive, cycle aware practice ecosystem for ITI, 12th Science, Diploma, B.Sc and Engineering Graduate aspirants.

Clearing the 4 big confusions about the RRB Technician exam 2026-27

Misinformation about the RRB Technician exam spreads very quickly across the internet coaching forums. Understanding the actual structure of the exam is the first step to eliminating confusion before you start your preparation.

Confusion Point Common Myth on Coaching Sites Verified Administrative Reality
Selection Stages Assumes a multi stage structure like ALP with CBT-1, CBT-2 and a Trade Test. Single stage CBT (100 questions, 90 minutes) followed directly by Document Verification and Medical.
Grade Differentiation Treats Grade 3 and Grade 1 Signal as one and the same. Separate qualifications, separate pay levels and distinct paper patterns (Grade 3 has 40 marks of Science; Grade 1 Signal has 35 marks of Engineering and 20 marks of Computers).
Active Exam Timing Treats the October 2026 exams as a future event. CEN 02/2026 CBT was conducted in October 2026 with the response sheets live on 15 October 2026. The practice modules are for the upcoming 2027 cycle.
Application Flexibility Claims that you can only apply for one grade irrespective of your qualifications. Candidates with dual qualifications are eligible to apply for both grades separately provided there is no conflict in the exam shift timings.

If you have both an ITI and a Diploma/B.Sc you can go through the eligibility criteria to see if you are eligible to apply for both posts in separate applications.

RRB Technician Exam Pattern 2027 - One Stage, Two Different Papers

The Single Stage Computer Based Test is 100 MCQs to be attempted in 90 minutes. The marking is very different between Grade 3 and Grade 1 Signal though.

Grade 3 Pattern (100 Questions, 90 Minutes, 40 Mark General Science)
  • Mathematics: 25 Questions (25 Marks)
  • General Intelligence & Reasoning: 25 Questions (25 Marks)
  • General Science (Physics, Chemistry, Life Sciences - Class 10 standard): 40 Questions (40 Marks)
  • General Awareness / Current Affairs: 10 Questions (10 Marks)
Grade 1 Signal Pattern (100 Questions, 90 Minutes, 35 Mark Engineering + 20 Mark Computer)
  • General Awareness: 10 Questions (10 Marks)
  • General Intelligence & Reasoning: 15 Questions (15 Marks)
  • Mathematics: 20 Questions (20 Marks)
  • Basic Science & Engineering: 35 Questions (35 Marks)
  • Computer Fundamentals & Applications: 20 Questions (20 Marks)

Marking Scheme and the 1/3 Negative Marking (Math)

  • Correct Answer: +1 Mark
  • Incorrect answer: -1/3 (0.33) Mark deducted
  • Unattempted Question: 0 Marks (no penalty)

Negative Marking Safe Guess Strategy Table

Elimination Level Mathematical Odds Expected Value per Guess Strategic Recommendation
No Elimination (Blind Guess) 1 in 4 chance of being correct 0.00 Marks Never make blind guesses - the penalty will eat into your raw score.
1 option eliminated 1 in 3 chance of being correct +0.11 marks Favourable odds - attempt the question if you can justify the elimination.
2 options eliminated 1 in 2 chance of it being correct +0.33 marks Very good odds - always go for a guess when 2 options are eliminated.

Worked Example 1: If you attempt 90 questions, get 70 correct and 20 wrong:
Raw Score = (70 x 1) minus (20 x 0.333) = 70 minus 6.66 = 63.34 Marks

Worked Example 2: If a candidate blindly guesses 15 questions after running out of time, gets 4 right and 11 wrong:
Penalty Impact = (4 x 1) - (11 x 0.333) = 4 - 3.66 = +0.34 marks.
(Which is a small positive in this instance, the variation across the different shifts means that random guessing is a very high risk proposition).

Physics: Motion, force, laws of motion, gravitation, work, energy, power, sound, reflection and refraction of light, the human eye, electricity, magnetic effects of current and sources of energy.
Chemistry: Chemical reactions and equations, acids, bases and salts, metals and non-metals, carbon compounds and periodic classification of elements.
Biology: Life processes, control and coordination, reproduction in organisms, heredity and our environment.

Grade 3 Sample Question & Step by Step Solution

Problem: An electric iron uses energy at 880 W when heating is at maximum and 330 W when at minimum. The voltage is 220 V. Calculate the current and resistance in each case.

Step by Step Solution:
Formula: Power (P) = V x I therefore current (I) = P/V. Resistance (R) = V/I or V2/P.

Case 1 (Maximum Heating):
P1 = 880 W, V = 220 V
I1 = 880/220 = 4 A
R1 = 220/4 = 55 Ohms

Case 2 (Minimum Heating):
P2 = 330 W, V = 220 V
I2 = 330 divided by 220 equals 1.5 A
R2 = 220 divided by 1.5 equals 146.67 Ohms.

Grade 1 Signal: Basic Science & Engineering, Electronics and Computer Fundamentals

Basic Science & Engineering: Engineering drawing, units, measurement, mass, weight, density, work, power, energy, speed, velocity, heat, temperature, basic electricity and occupational safety.

Grade 1 Signal Sample Question & Step-by-Step Solution

Problem: In a common emitter transistor amplifier the collector current changes by 2 mA when the base current changes by 20 µA. What is the value of the current gain β of the transistor?

Step-by-Step Solution:
Formula: Current gain in common-emitter mode is β = ΔIC / ΔIB
Given values:
ΔIC = 2 mA = 2 x 10-3 A
ΔIB = 20 µA = 20 x 10-6 A
Calculation:
β = (2 x 10-3) / (20 x 10-6) = (2 x 10-3) / (2 x 10-5) = 102 = 100

Analyzing the October 2026 Shift Papers: How to use your response sheet

Following the conclusion of the CEN 02/2026 Computer Based Tests in October 2026 the candidates were able to log on to their candidate login portals to view their official response sheets. A proper analysis of your response sheet is absolutely vital to your future exam preparation.

Download and re-solve: don't just look at your correct marks. Go through every single incorrect and unattempted question and re-solve the mathematical and scientific problems on paper without looking at the answer key.
Categorise your errors: were they due to a gap in the concept, a calculation error, misreading of the question stem or negative marking guesswork?
Normalisation caveat: the raw scores from each shift are statistically normalised to take account of the variation in paper difficulty from shift to shift. Your final official score may therefore be different from your raw response sheet total.

Error Log Template

Question Type / Topic Reason Missed (Concept / Speed / Misread / Guess) Correct Fix / Rule to remember Revisit Date
Example: Optics (Lens Formula) Calculation Error (Sign convention mistake) Real focal length of a concave lens is negative (f = -v) After 3 days
Example: Coding-Decoding Speed / Time Pressure Check reverse alphabetical positioning for shifting ciphers After 5 days

Historical Context (CEN 02/2025): The official regional cutoff marks in that cycle were very different across the various Railway Recruitment Boards depending on the applicant load, the local category reservation and the total number of regional vacancies.

Important note: these past figures are purely for historical reference. As the paper difficulty, the total number of applicants and the vacancy quotas all vary in each cycle, candidates in no way should treat the historical cutoffs as targets for their 2027 preparation.

Product Feature: AI-Based Weak Area Recommendation

Smart Performance Coach

Taking practice tests without some form of diagnostic of the failure points results in flatlining. That's where our test engine comes in with an automated diagnostic tracking system.

After every test you submit, the Analytical Engine goes well beyond the simple percentile aggregates and actually deconstructs your performance. It will identify precisely the conceptual weak links you had (e.g. a sign change in optics formula, a wrong calculation in electrical power, or time loss across engineering drawing sets).

The platform then generates targeted revision advice which acts as your very own performance coach to ensure that your next attempt is focused on your actual weaknesses rather than your actual strengths.

Personalized Diagnostic Feedback: Post-test sectional analysis se candidate ko exact topic gaps dikhte hain taaki agle mock attempt mein focused revision ke sath score improve ho sake.

5 Common Mistakes Technician Aspirants make in Mock Tests

  • Practicing with mixed grade papers (i.e. doing your mock tests which are a mixture of Grade 3 and Grade 1 Signal questions) will in fact prevent you from getting a good feel for the 40 marks of Science that are on the paper or the 55 marks of Engineering/Computer.
  • Ignore the negative marking. If you're just making random, uncalculated guesses during your timed practice sessions you're going to get a completely distorted picture of your real accuracy and you're going to develop very bad exam technique.
  • Skip the sectional time management. If you spend too long on Mathematics and not enough time on General Science or Computer Fundamentals you'll simply not get the paper completed.
  • Failing to keep an error log: if you're taking your mock tests without going back and analysing your wrong answers then you're simply going to be repeating the same conceptual errors again and again.
  • Ignore the response sheet diagnostics entirely: to treat the October 2026 shift papers as nothing more than a score sheet is a colossal waste of the actual insight that the official examiners take from their questions.
